BUDGET & SPENDING:
Rep. Gabbard has called for significant reduction in military spending and paid lip service to the debt issue. However, she’s proposed to use that money instead for wasteful domestic projects.
Rep. Gabbard has routinely criticized domestic surveillance and was a co-sponsor of the USA RIGHTS Act, which would rein in the surveillance apparatus.
Rep. Gabbard has co-sponsored legislation which would introduce a wealth tax, taxes on stock and bond transactions, and would increase taxes on self-employment.
Rep. Gabbard voted for the most recent Farm Bill and voted against free market amendments to reform our sugar program and repeal WOTUS regulation. She was, however, one of only a handful of representatives who supported Rep. Thomas Massie’s Raw Milk Freedom amendment.
As one of two military veterans in the race, Rep. Gabbard has made this promise the cornerstone of her campaign. She’s promised to stop the endless wars and introduced a resolution with the late-Rep. Walter Jones to stop executive overreach on warmaking.
Rep. Gabbard supports repealing the tariffs on China, but has been one of the more vocal critics of the Trans-Pacific Partnership and NAFTA in Congress, claiming they hurt the economy.
Rep. Gabbard has endorsed Medicare for All and regularly supports heavy-handed price negotiation from the government to force down prescription drug prices.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM:
Rep. Gabbard supported the First Step Act and has worked thoroughly in Congress to reduce sentences for nonviolent offenders as well as to eliminate mandatory minimums.
WELFARE & ENTITLEMENTS:
Rep. Gabbard has pledged to defend Social Security from any budget cuts or privatization and has voted against work requirements for food stamps.
TECH & TELECOMMUNICATIONS:
Rep. Gabbard has stopped short of calling for the breakup of tech companies, but has claimed they need increased regulation because of online censorship. She also supported Title II.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT:
Rep. Gabbard has actually opposed the Green New Deal, but only because of its vague nature. She proposes banning nuclear energy at home and other overbearing regulations.
Rep. Gabbard supports free 2-year college and free 4-year college for families making under $125,000/year. She also supports increasing teacher pay.
Rep. Gabbard has said decriminalizing border crossings would lead to open borders and that we need a safe, secure border. She also was one of the few Democrats to vote for increased refugee vetting. She has, however, criticized many of President Trump’s efforts to secure our border.
