BUDGET & SPENDING:
Sen. Booker was willing to cut spending to balance the budget as Mayor of Newark, NJ. However, as a Senator, he’s voted for trillions in spending and endorsed much more.
As a Senator, Booker has decried warrantless surveillance as illegal and unconstitutional. He voted against legislation to expand surveillance, but has been cagey about ending the practice altogether.
The Tax Policy Center estimates Booker’s tax plan would actually decrease government revenues. However, he has promised to raise other taxes on investment and capital gains to fill that gap.
Sen. Booker voted for the last Farm Bill, supporting millions in wasteful spending. He did introduce an amendment with Sen. Mike Lee to promote accountability in federal checkoff programs.
Sen. Booker has been steadfast in maintaining that we must not be at constant war overseas. He has kept the door open to limited strikes and has proposed decreasing military spending while increasing foreign aid.
Sen. Booker voted against fast-tracking the Trans-Pacific Partnership and has parrotted protectionist rhetoric on China. He has acknowledged that trade does benefit the US economy.
Sen. Booker supports a phased-in approach to Medicare for All. He has co-sponsored the Medicare for All bill in the Senate.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM:
Sen. Booker supported the First Step Act and introduced the Next Step Act. He was instrumental in assuring the passage of criminal justice reform in the 115th Congress.
WELFARE & ENTITLEMENTS:
Sen. Booker has promoted some expensive welfare programs, including one where the government essentially funds a savings account for every American child since birth.
TECH & TELECOMMUNICATIONS:
Sen. Booker criticized plans to break up tech companies, and once ran his own tech startup. However, he endorsed and tried to reinstate the heavy-handed Title II regulations on the Internet.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT:
Sen. Booker is a co-sponsor of the Green New Deal in the Senate. His own proposal includes $3 trillion in spending over ten years to help meet the deal’s requirements.
Sen. Booker, back when he was Mayor of Newark, NJ, supported school choice and a voucher system. He’s since grown more quiet about that support, but has not renounced it. This has put him at odds with teacher unions. He still wants to put more funding into public schools.
Sen. Booker has endorsed an elimination of any and all immigrant detentions. His policies would in effect leave us with an open border.
